What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a tooth-root like fixture made of a bio-inert metal called Titanium, and is designed to replace the root of a missing tooth in order that a Crown may be seated over it eventually to replace the missing tooth itself.
Some people ask if dental implants are truly successful. As of March 2022, over 4 million people get dental implants done every year world-wide. Surveys have shown that 9 out of 10 implants placed following protocols last up to 25-30 years at least. However, certain risk factors are to be assessed and patients cautioned about them in order to have their dental implants last them their lifetime.

Frequently Asked
Questions
When teeth are present the transfer of chewing forces via the roots of the teeth are responsible for a mechanism, which keeps the underlying bone healthy. The loss of a tooth initiates a process of bone resorption in the area as a result of absence of stimulative forces in the region. Root form implants not only replace the roots of missing teeth, they also enable the continuation of transfer of chewing forces to the bone thereby maintaining the quality and quantity of bone optimal. Bridges on the other hand do not enable transfer of chewing forces to the region where the tooth is missing and hence unable to prevent bone loss.
Estimates based on patient feedback surveys have reported that the placement of an implant is about half as uncomfortable as an extraction. The need for antibiotics and painkiller medication is also significantly reduced when compared to that needed after extraction.
Recovery from a routine implant surgery is a matter of 24 to 48 hours and the patient can expect to carry on with normal schedules without having to bear discomfort or pain in a day or two after the procedure.
The first titanium dental implants placed in a Swedish patient in 1965 supported his restoration successfully for over 40 years until he passed away in 2006. Yet, there are several factors that make long-term predictability of outcome a variable that is more in the hands of patients than dentists. Patient-education for the use of oral hygiene measures and the importance of regular follow-up enable the implants and the rehabilitation to be monitored and maintained.
